Western Europe is emerging from its hottest summer on record, while ocean temperatures outside polar regions reached unprecedented levels in August 2026.
August 2026: Global Temperatures Reach Absolute Record Levels
It’s official: August 2026 enters history as the warmest August on record since systematic observations began in 1940, according to the European Copernicus Climate Service. The record is especially notable because August typically outshines July only rarely on a planetary scale. The global thermometer stood at 16.96 °C (62.53 °F), up 0.06 °C (0.11 °F) from the previous month. The planet thus briefly sits above the 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) threshold relative to pre-industrial times, even though El Niño has not yet reached its maximum intensity.
Copernicus records for August 2026 show a global mean temperature of 16.96 °C (62.53 °F), which is 0.85 °C (1.53 °F) above the 1991-2020 average for August. The value is also 1.65 °C (2.97 °F) above the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900. This marks the first time since November 2025 that a month has exceeded the 1.5 °C mark, the European climate service notes.
The chronology is noteworthy in itself. August was 0.06 °C warmer than July 2026, whereas July is normally the peak heat month globally. In the ERA5 data series, Copernicus had observed such an inversion only four times since 1940—in 1945, 1951, 1955, and 1985. Across the twelve months from September 2025 to August 2026, the planet averaged about 1.48 °C above the pre-industrial reference. That does not automatically mean the Paris 1.5 °C target has been officially crossed: that threshold is assessed over multi-year periods rather than a single month.
Climate and Ocean Temperatures: Another Record Beneath the Surface
The extraordinary warmth is not confined to the atmosphere. In the oceans lying between 60° South and 60° North — i.e., outside polar regions — the sea surface temperature reached 21.07 °C (69.93 °F) in August 2026. The previous August record, 20.98 °C (69.76 °F), dated from 2023. This year’s level also matches the all-time monthly high recorded in March 2024, when global ocean temperatures typically peak for the season in March.
The day-to-day sequence is even more striking. Since June 19, 2026, the temperature of extra-tropical oceans has topped the corresponding daily record for every calendar day. On August 24 and 25, it peaked at 21.11 °C (70.00 °F), surpassing the previous high of 21.09 °C (69.96 °F) set in March 2024. Record-high August temperatures were notably seen in the tropical Pacific, Europe’s Atlantic coastline, and the western Mediterranean, where Copernicus reports marine heatwaves ranging from strong to severe.
This accumulation of ocean heat plays a central role in the climate system: the oceans continually exchange heat and moisture with the atmosphere and influence rainfall, storms, and continental temperatures. The August 2026 data thus point to a climate anomaly that goes beyond a few heatwaves on land.
Beyond Record Temperatures, Europe Endured Droughts and Low River Flows
That global record was accompanied by a particularly severe summer in Western Europe. From June through August 2026, the region’s average temperature reached 21.69 °C (71.04 °F), i.e., 2.54 °C (4.57 °F) above the 1991-2020 average, according to Copernicus. The previous peak dated back to 2003, the year of the deadly heatwave that then stood as an exception. Since then, temperature patterns have shifted: all summers in Western Europe since 2015 have been warmer than the reference average.
In addition to the heat, drought took hold. Copernicus reports exceptionally dry soils across numerous parts of Western Europe in August. The Danube, the Rhine, the Southern Bug (a major river in Eastern Europe), and the Dnieper all experienced notably low flows. Over the course of the summer, long stretches of Europe’s major rivers reached seasonal minima in available records. France, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia were particularly affected by drought and heatwaves, Copernicus notes.
