Electric mosquito lamps promise peaceful evenings thanks to their ultraviolet light and an electrified grid. Yet the crackling of the device does not prove it eliminates the insects responsible for bites. So, are these lamps really useful, or do they mostly kill non-targets?

How does a UV mosquito lamp work?
A classic mosquito lamp contains a source of ultraviolet light surrounded by a high-voltage metal grid. Drawn to the light, the insect approaches the grid and dies by electrocution.

Why do mosquitoes prefer your skin to UV light?
Female mosquitoes seek a blood meal necessary for egg production. To locate a person, they rely on several cues.
They can detect carbon dioxide exhaled by respiration. Body odors, heat, humidity, and certain visual cues then help them close in on their target.
A simple UV light reproduces this whole signal set very poorly. The presence of a nearby person can be far more attractive than the lamp itself.
The Asian tiger mosquito, active mainly during the day and early evening, is also a target poorly matched to traditional electrified UV lamps.
A device that is not very selective for insects
The main drawback of these lamps is their lack of selectivity. They can trap moths, gnats, small beetles, and many aquatic or nocturnal insects.
Yet, these creatures are part of ecosystem functioning. Some pollinate plants, decompose organic matter, or serve as food for birds, bats, and fish.
Installing an electrified lamp outdoors can therefore unnecessarily increase mortality among insects. This problem adds to the broader effects of nocturnal lighting on their orientation and life cycles.
If you use a lamp to trap flies indoors, place it away from open windows. Avoid installing it outdoors, where it may attract numerous non-target insects.
Are CO₂ traps more effective?
Not all lamps and traps operate the same way. Some devices combine carbon dioxide, odor lures, heat, and a suction system.
These devices seek to reproduce several signals emitted by the human body. They can capture more mosquitoes than a simple UV-lit grid. However, their performance varies by species, weather, the surface being protected, and the trap’s placement.
They are often more expensive and require consumables or regular maintenance. Even when well installed, a trap does not guarantee an entirely mosquito-free terrace.
What steps should you take against mosquitoes?
The most useful method is to prevent their reproduction. A very small amount of standing water can be enough for larvae to develop, especially for the Asian tiger mosquito.
Once a week, consider:
- empty saucers, buckets, toys, tarps, and small containers;
- clean gutters and drains;
- securely cover water collectors;
- regularly refresh the water in birdbaths;
- store watering cans and wheelbarrows inverted.
Window and door screens also provide durable protection without killing other insects. Outdoors, loose-fitting, covering clothing reduces the skin areas exposed.
When the risk of bites is high, choose an approved repellent suitable for the user’s age. Carefully follow the label. Scented bracelets, ultrasonic devices, and many essential-oil-based solutions do not provide reliable protection.
Why does a mosquito bite itch?
When the mosquito bites, it injects saliva containing several substances that facilitate its blood meal. The immune system reacts to this saliva, causing redness, swelling, and itching.
We are not all equally prone to mosquitoes. Breathing patterns, body odors, sweating, skin temperature, and the microorganisms on the surface of the skin can alter our attractiveness.
In short, electrified UV lamps can capture a few mosquitoes, but they do not provide reliable protection against bites. It is better to target standing water and directly protect the people exposed.
