Companion planting can help you both boost the growth of certain plants and repel certain pests or protect your fruits and vegetables from diseases. Not all companion planting schemes are equally effective, but they remain an excellent gateway to a natural garden!
Companion Planting: Which Plants Help Zucchini?
To garden pesticide-free, practicing companion planting in the organic veggie garden, also known as companion planting, can be decisive. Which vegetables are good neighbors—or conversely harmful—for zucchini?
A zucchini, a summer staple on the table, is relatively easy to grow in the garden. To give yourself the best chances, learn which plants support it and boost its growth.
Which vegetables should you pair with zucchini to grow it faster?
Zucchini can grow more vigorously and quickly when paired with other plants in your garden; there are many, including peas, radishes, mint, or even chives and pole beans.
The biggest enemy of zucchini is the squash bug (Anasa tristis), which, after stinging the plant, sucks out the sap to feed. In doing so, the bug injects toxins that cause damage. The result? Wilted leaves that can kill young plants.
Companion plants to deter squash bugs
To limit the impact of the squash bug and thus its presence on your crops, the zucchini’s best friend will be nasturtium, which is perfect given the color and beauty of its flowers!

Not only does nasturtium repel the zucchini’s sworn enemy, but it also covers the soil nicely, which, along with mulching, helps keep the soil moist more easily.
The companion crops that your zucchini helps
While zucchini can benefit from certain vegetables in your garden, they can also help them out—without expecting anything in return… or almost!
Sweet corn and Jerusalem artichoke greatly benefit from having zucchini growing at their feet. They provide shade that reduces water evaporation. Zucchini, being water-hungry plants, are very sensitive when water is scarce (leaf wilting, etc.), so they also enjoy growing in the shade of these tall plants from time to time.
Companion Planting to Avoid: The Zucchini’s Enemies
A planting strategy, as you’d expect, can also be counterproductive. You must be careful not to plant or sow varieties that will hamper your zucchini and vice versa.
Vegetables that don’t pair well with zucchini
Here you should first avoid having cucumbers alongside zucchini. Not only do they not get along, they can spread diseases that both are susceptible to.

You should also avoid planting tomatoes near zucchini, as well as all kinds of aromatic herbs, or even potatoes.
Vegetables that zucchini don’t like
When it comes to unlucky companion planting with zucchini, there is really only one, and it happens to be reciprocally disliked, as noted above: potatoes. So avoid mixing them too closely!
The Extra Trick to Succeed with Zucchini in the Garden
If you’re going on vacation or a long weekend and want to avoid coming back to overripe zucchini, pick all the flowers from your zucchini plant before you leave; you can make excellent fritters with them!
