Eco-Friendly Laundry: How to Wash Clothes with Black Soap

Ethan Hartwell | March 30, 2026

Black soap is a soft, dark-colored soap, characterized by its viscous texture and thick consistency. This versatile product has been used for centuries, both in beauty rituals and in domestic cleaning.

Black Soap for Naturally Clean, Soft Laundry

Made from olive oil and crushed black olives, black soap, 100% biodegradable, is highly prized in the south of France and in the Maghreb for its degreasing and cleansing effectiveness. Like Marseille soap, you can easily make your laundry with black soap.
But beware, due to its dark color, black soap can slightly tint very light fabrics.

Simple Black Soap Laundry Recipes:

In the washing machine’s detergent drawer, instead of your traditional detergent, use 3 tablespoons of liquid black soap for 11 pounds (5 kg) of laundry. Add 100 ml of white vinegar during the rinse to prevent grime buildup in the machine and to replace regular fabric softener.

Or

Instead of regular detergent, you can also use 1 tablespoon of black soap, add a handful of washing soda crystals (a natural cleaning product derived from sea salt and chalk, whose properties are similar to baking soda but stronger). And wash your laundry as you normally would.

Liquid Black Soap for Stubborn Stains

If some of your clothes—whether dark or colored—are stained with grease, ink, or blood, for example, you can apply pure black soap directly to the stains before washing. Do this:

  • turn the stained garment inside out,
  • apply a little black soap to the stain,
  • turn the garment back to its right side,
  • apply some more black soap to the stain, and rub it in,
  • finally, wash it in the machine as you would with other clothes.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that a one-liter bottle of liquid black soap typically costs less than $10… About the same price as regular laundry detergent, but it yields many more washes because you use less!

Testimonial from Helene, a Black Soap User

« Black soap was already widely used in my childhood. My mother did laundry with black soap. Since then, I use it too, and it doesn’t bother me at all. Even the scent, which didn’t seem very appealing at first, no longer bothers me—my laundry smells natural, that’s all! »
