Energy Voucher 2026: Why Haven’t You Received It Yet?

Ethan Hartwell | April 9, 2026

Since April 1, 2026, the government has launched the energy check campaign, a form of assistance designed to support modest households as energy costs keep rising. Each year, several million households receive this aid automatically, without any prior steps. Yet as days go by, some French residents wonder: why hasn’t their energy check arrived yet?

Energy Check: why do delays vary?

Contrary to a common belief, the energy check is not sent out simultaneously across the entire country. Distribution happens in successive waves, region by region. Thus, some households may receive it in the early days of April, while others must wait several weeks.

A first sending phase runs from April 1 to April 20, 2026, followed by a second wave starting May 1. This logistical organization explains a large part of the delays observed. Moreover, about 3.8 million households are covered by the first wave, while nearly 700,000 additional households will receive their aid later. In addition, the processing relies on updated tax data. Cross-checking the reference tax income with housing information can lead to last-minute adjustments, which sometimes delays dispatch.

Are you sure you’re eligible for the energy check?

The energy check is automatically awarded based on the reference tax income and household composition. More precisely, it depends on the level of resources and the number of consumption units in the home. In 2026, the amount of aid ranges from €48 to €277, with an average estimated at €153. This variation reflects differences in income and household size.

However, some households that are eligible may not be automatically identified. This can occur in cases such as a recent move, a change in family circumstances, or errors in administrative data. In these specific cases, no automatic receipt is guaranteed, even if criteria are met.

If your energy check hasn’t arrived yet, several verifications are in order. First, make sure you actually meet the eligibility conditions. Then take into account the sending schedule, which can extend into May. If doubt persists, the ministry recommends contacting the dedicated assistance or filing an online complaint. A dedicated portal has also been opened to allow households not automatically identified to apply. This process can be completed online or by mail, with a deadline set at December 31, 2026. This arrangement serves as an important safety net to prevent some households from missing out on this aid.

How to use your energy check effectively?

Once received, the energy check offers several usable options. It can be used to pay electricity or gas bills, but also to fund certain energy-efficiency renovation projects. In the context of the energy transition and rising prices, this tool sits within a broader framework of support for low-income households.

The total budget mobilized reaches about €600 million in 2026. Moreover, its use is simplified: it can be sent directly to the energy supplier or used online. This flexibility aims to encourage prompt use, while reducing administrative steps.
