Since July 22, 2026, the Gironde region in southwestern France has faced an unprecedented wildfire. Despite mass evacuations and tens of thousands of hectares consumed by flames, a portion of the population continues to minimize climate change. Several psychological mechanisms can help explain this apparent contradiction.

As of July 27, the Gironde fire had burned 42,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of 220,000 people. Yet we often tend to believe that climate risks mainly affect others.
In Gironde, 42,000 hectares burned by flames
Declared on July 22 in the commune of Saumos, the fire quickly spread through the Gironde forest massif. By the morning of Monday, July 27, 42,000 hectares had been burned.
Approximately 220,000 people had been evacuated across 23 communities. The tally also reported 240 homes destroyed. Nearly 2,500 firefighters remained on duty, including 84 who had been injured since operations began.
Emergency services reported fewer active ignition points than the previous day, but the blaze remained neither fixed nor controlled. One zone stayed notably active between Marcheprime and Pierroton, near the Bordeaux metropolitan area.
The drop in wind brought a temporary lull. Yet a new heat wave was forecast for the Southwest, with highs potentially reaching 104°F (40°C).
Climate disruption makes forests more flammable
A wildfire almost always has a definite starting point, often linked to human activity, carelessness, or an accident. Climate change does not ignite the fire directly.
However, it fosters conditions that allow flames to spread rapidly. High temperatures increase evapotranspiration and dry out vegetation. A decrease in rainfall in certain regions also heightens forest vulnerability.
According to Météo-France, fire risk is now expanding into areas that were once less affected. The fire season is starting earlier and can last longer into autumn.
Why does the danger sometimes feel abstract?
While images from Gironde show evacuations, homes destroyed, and burned forests, some people still view these events as exceptional or unrelated to climate.
A meta-analysis published in January 2026 in the journal Nature Sustainability offers a clue. The researchers analyzed 83 results from surveys conducted among more than 70,000 people in 17 countries.
In 81 of the 83 results, participants judged that climate risks threatened others more than themselves. This optimism bias helps keep the danger psychologically distant.
The normality bias can also come into play. Our brains prefer to imagine that the situation will eventually return to normal. Fires are thus perceived as a one-off accident, even when extreme episodes recur.
The brain is not the sole driver of climate denial
Cognitive biases do not fully explain climate denial. Misinformation, political beliefs, economic interests, and the fear of having to change one’s lifestyle also play roles.
The Gironde fire nonetheless reminds us that climate risk is no longer a threat reserved for future generations or distant countries. It already affects homes, travel, tourism, the local economy, and public health.
To foster awareness without inducing despair, experts recommend focusing on local consequences. It is also essential to present concrete prevention and adaptation solutions.
