How Your Favorite Hot Drink Affects Your Skeleton’s Strength

A ten-year scientific study sheds light on the divergent effects of two everyday beverages on the skeletal framework of aging women.

Tea, a Valuable Ally

For a long time, coffee and tea were lumped together because of their caffeine content, but they do not affect bone density the same way after menopause. A large ten-year study conducted on nearly 10,000 women over age 65 reveals that your daily hot beverage choice could influence the long-term strength of your skeleton. While moderate consumption poses no major danger, notable differences emerge depending on intake levels and the active molecules unique to each drink.

Researchers found that regular tea consumption is associated with a slightly higher bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck and hip in postmenopausal women. Although the measured increase is modest in clinical terms, the trend remains steady over time. This phenomenon is explained by tea’s richness in flavonoids and antioxidants, bioactive compounds capable of slowing bone resorption and stimulating the activity of osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone formation.

Excessive Coffee: A Risk of Bone Fragility

Conversely, drinking two to three cups of coffee per day is entirely neutral for the skeleton, but the balance shifts with excess. The study indicates that consuming more than five cups daily leads to a measurable weakening of bone mineral density. High-dose caffeine has the characteristic of increasing urinary calcium excretion and hindering its intestinal absorption, which, over a long period, can contribute to weakening the hip’s bone structure.

Cross-analyses of this study highlighted significant interactions with other lifestyle habits and physiological factors. Thus, bone density deterioration linked to high caffeine intake is particularly pronounced among women who regularly consume alcohol or have low calcium intake. In contrast, the protective effects of tea on bone health appeared even more beneficial among women with a higher body mass index (BMI).

A Real but Secondary Impact

Scientists emphasize the need to view these findings in perspective: the effects of tea and coffee remain modest compared with the core pillars of osteoporosis prevention. Tea is not a miracle cure on its own, just as coffee consumed in moderation is not a poison to the skeleton. Daily calcium intake, adequate vitamin D supplementation, and regular physical activity remain the primary levers for preserving bone health.

While tea consumption is linked with better bone mineral density, researchers caution that this does not automatically translate into a dramatic reduction in hip fractures. Bone density is only one parameter among others, such as bone micro-architecture quality, balance, and muscle mass, in the risk of falls among older adults. Tea thus contributes to an overall balance without guaranteeing total immunity against fractures.
