DIY Scalp Scrub: Benefits and Recipes

A scalp scrub is useful for cleansing the scalp when it itches or flakes. Here’s how to do it.

To cleanse the skin and rid it of impurities, people naturally think of facial or body scrubs. So why not try a scalp scrub? Still underused, it can be very helpful for itchiness, excess oil, or dandruff.

Itchy scalp, oily hair… why do a scalp scrub?

What is your hair routine? Shampoo, conditioner, hair mask… These treatments are essential, but they don’t always purify the scalp deeply.

A scalp scrub helps remove dead skin cells, product buildup, and excess oil that can clog pores. The result: a healthier scalp and lighter-feeling hair.

On the other hand, if you have a healthy scalp, there is no need to do it routinely. Too frequent scrubs can irritate and disrupt the skin’s balance.

Make your own scalp scrub at home with natural ingredients

You can make a homemade scalp scrub once a week maximum to avoid a stripping effect. Gently massage with the pads of your fingers, not with aggressive rubbing.

Good news: you don’t need to invest in pricey products. You can use natural ingredients you already have in your kitchen. The important part is to tailor the recipe to your scalp type.

Against dandruff

In case of dandruff, this purifying scrub can help you regain a healthier scalp:

  • 4 tablespoons coarse salt
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 drops of tea tree essential oil

Apply to the scalp, leave on for about ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly. The salt exfoliates, while the vinegar and tea tree cleanse.

Itchy scalp

If you have an itchy head, opt for a gentle exfoliation:

  • 1 tablespoon ground coffee
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

The coffee grounds act as a scalp exfoliant, while olive oil nourishes and soothes.

Tip: if your scalp is sensitive, add a dab of shampoo or conditioner to your mixture. You’ll combine washing and exfoliation in one step.

For oily hair

If you have oily hair, baking soda can help regulate the excess sebum:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 drop tea tree essential oil
  • your usual shampoo

Mix and apply like a shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing. This treatment helps cleanse the scalp and unclog pores.

Homemade scalp scrub: our tips

A scalp scrub can be useful after coloring, especially if you have itchiness. However: baking soda and coarse salt can cause color fading.

Avoid it, unless you want to dull an overly intense color.

Some tips depending on your hair type:

  • Brunettes and redheads can use coffee grounds with apple cider vinegar to refresh highlights.
  • Blondes should favor oats mixed with camomile hydrosol, to soothe and brighten the hair.
