In April 2026, British fishermen began hauling common octopuses from their nets. These Mediterranean creatures had no business being there. They are fleeing. Across Europe, marine ecosystems are reordering themselves: dolphins are feeding on jellyfish for lack of mackerel, foundational species are dying, and migrations are accelerating. The World Weather Attribution study published in July 2026 explains why: roughly 2°C of this warming comes directly from human-caused climate change.

When species abandon their habitats because of warming

Since spring, observations have multiplied along the British coast. The common octopus, a species typically Mediterranean, is now colonizing English waters. This migration is far from trivial. It signals a retreat to the north, toward areas where temperatures remain viable. Scientists see it as a warning sign: when species abandon their historical ranges en masse, the entire ecosystem wobbles. These cephalopods are trying to survive in an ocean that has become too warm.

In 2026, 90% of the Bay of Biscay and Iberian coastline region experienced marine heatwaves. In the western Mediterranean, that share reached 80%. In the eastern portion, 70% of the surface currently endures ocean heatwaves, compared with only 9% in a cooler climate. These percentages reflect a brutal ecological reality: marine habitats are transforming at a pace faster than species can adapt. In June 2026, the western Mediterranean recorded anomalies of 6°C above seasonal norms. Such a thermal deviation shatters the tolerance thresholds of many marine organisms.

The human signature of climate change

The World Weather Attribution collective conducted a rigorous attribution analysis. By combining satellite observations and climate models, researchers isolated the portion of warming attributable to human activities. Result: human-caused climate change has added about 2°C of warming in the Mediterranean, 1.4°C in the Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Peninsula, and 1.3°C in the Celtic region. Thomas Frölicher, environmental physicist at the University of Bern, says: “From the Atlantic off Ireland to the Mediterranean, Europe’s seas are seeing an alarming rise in temperatures. Our research shows clearly that this rise is due to climate change, particularly the continued burning of fossil fuels.”

Without the human-caused warming, marine heatwave events observed in 2026 would have been “very rare,” the study notes. Today, they have become common. This statistical shift reveals the acceleration of the phenomenon. Oceans absorb more than 90% of the planet’s excess heat. European seas, semi-enclosed and shallow in places, are accumulating this thermal energy at an unsustainable rate. July 2026 recorded the highest global sea surface temperatures ever measured. Marine ecosystems, which evolved over millennia within stable thermal ranges, are now subjected to repeated shocks.

Dolphins are now feeding on jellyfish. Mackerel and other cetacean prey traditionally favored by whales are thinning out, fleeing northward or disappearing. Jellyfish, by contrast, flourish in warm, oxygen-poor waters. Their proliferation signals a major ecological shift: ecosystems are moving from fish-dominated to gelatinous-organism-dominated.

The so-called “foundation species”—corals, sponges, and macroalgae that form nurseries, breeding grounds, and refuges for thousands of organisms—are fixed to the substrate and cannot migrate. They bear the full brunt of thermal stress. Massive mortalities are mounting in the Mediterranean. Gorgonians blanch, sponges necrotize, and Posidonia seagrass meadows retreat. With a domino effect: fish lose shelter, invertebrates lose feeding zones, and biodiversity erodes.
