How to illuminate the complexion naturally for the holidays? You don’t need to go overboard. Natural beauty products will help highlight your look for the New Year’s Eve celebration.
As year’s end approaches, a flood of eyeshadows, glosses, and iridescent powders will once again flood the bathroom counters… It’s perfectly normal and rather enjoyable to present yourself at your best for a New Year’s Eve celebration, but beware of excess! The dreaded thick layer of foundation topped with a heavy stroke of blush is to be avoided. The idea is to illuminate the complexion without going too far.
Why not opt for a fresh and natural complexion by planning ahead and thanks to the tips from our Slow Cosmetics expert, Julien Kaibeck?
Brighten the complexion: prepping the skin
In order to properly prepare the skin (and the complexion) for long holiday evenings, opt for a plant-based peel to free the skin of impurities. Trust the good old grandmother’s recipes.
Recipes for a plant-based peel
A ripe tomato cut in half horizontally and rubbed gently on the face works wonders to reveal the skin’s radiance. Always rinse with water, or better yet with water and whole milk, which, thanks to its lactic acids, prolongs the exfoliating action.
In any case, always apply afterwards a organic moisturizer or a few drops of jojoba oil to help the skin to rebuild its hydrolipid film.
Grain-based exfoliation recipe
There are other exfoliation methods as well, notably the many grain scrubs that mechanically exfoliate the skin (the famous “scrubs”).
Fine sugar can be mixed into your moisturizer for an express scrub, or into cream cheese for a 15-minute exfoliating mask.
Beware of winter excesses! The day of the event, the skin must be perfectly clean and well hydrated. Alcohol, indoor heating, and cold will indeed contribute to weakening the skin during the entire holiday period.
That’s why it’s important to opt for a rich day cream, or even a restorative facial oil for the skin.
Argan or evening primrose oils are rich in essential fatty acids and are reputed for their anti-aging action.
Your party makeup
The holiday makeup should be luminous, but not necessarily heavy. In the realm of natural cosmetics, there are now a few brands of makeup that are certified organic, but this remains the exception.

A good compromise is to use an organic tinted moisturizer with several beige shades often available and then powder with a mineral powder to even out the tone. Mineral makeup is now poised to take over from the chemical formulations that had dominated the cosmetics industry.
For rosy, plump lips
Apply a bit of shea butter on the lips and then gently rub a drop of ginger essential oil or black pepper essential oil on the lips. To enhance the glossy effect, you can add Acacia honey to the shea butter.
Don’t forget to remove your makeup!
One might be tempted to skip after a somewhat heavy night, but the skin needs to breathe! Between touches, remove makeup carefully, with an oil-based remover if needed for extra effectiveness.
