TFA can be found in water, soils, and certain foods. In light of new scientific data, Europe has just drastically lowered the amount deemed safe on a daily basis. Should we be worried? Here’s what this decision actually changes.
What is TFA?
Trifluoroacetic acid, or TFA, is a highly persistent chemical. In other words, it breaks down very slowly in the environment.
It can have several sources. It forms especially when certain pesticides and certain PFAS break down. PFAS are often dubbed “forever pollutants” because of their high persistence.
Once released, TFA can travel with water. It can reach:
- groundwater;
- soils;
- crops;
- and then certain foods.
The European Food Safety Authority, or EFSA, confirms this potential pathway. (1)
Why is Europe lowering the threshold deemed safe?
On July 22, 2026, EFSA set a new daily reference dose for TFA. It drops from 0.05 to 0.014 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day.
The new reference is therefore about 3.5 times lower than the previous one. (1)
This lowering rests on new studies. These studies notably show a change in thyroxine levels. This hormone is produced by the thyroid and helps the body function properly.
EFSA has thus chosen a more protective threshold. It also added a precautionary margin. Questions remain about certain potential long-term effects. (1)
What does “acceptable daily intake” mean?
This term may sound worrying. Yet it does not designate the amount present in a liter of water.
It is the amount a person can absorb each day, over a lifetime, with no appreciable health risk. This calculation takes body weight into account.
For an adult weighing 60 kilograms, the new reference corresponds to 0.84 milligrams of TFA per day. It covers total exposure, coming from both water and food.
Exceeding this figure for a single day does not automatically mean you will become sick. This reference is mainly used to assess long-term, recurring exposure.
And the acute reference dose?
EFSA has also created a second benchmark: 0.07 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
This “acute dose” concerns short-term exposure. It is used to check whether a one-time amount absorbed presents an immediate risk.
These two values should not be confused with a regulatory limit in drinking water. They will now help authorities decide whether rules should evolve.
Should we fear drinking tap water?
No, this announcement is not a warning aimed at a specific water source, food product, or brand. It does not mean that all drinking water exceeds a dangerous threshold.
EFSA provides a new scientific reference. The European Commission and member states will need to take it into account. They may discuss new measures to protect consumers. (1)
European countries already monitor PFAS in drinking water. Other programs track their presence in foods. The new threshold should help interpret TFA results more clearly.
What can consumers do?
Individual actions have limits. TFA is highly mobile and can be present far from its source. Boiling water is not a suitable solution. Not all home filters are designed to retain it.
You can however:
- check official water-quality results for your municipality;
- follow the recommendations of your local government or regional health agency;
- avoid using pesticides in your yard unless necessary;
- vary your diet to limit repeated exposure to the same contaminant.
Washing fruits and vegetables remains useful for hygiene and removal of some surface residues. However, this step does not guarantee the elimination of TFA already absorbed by a plant.
The main lever is therefore collective. It rests on better monitoring of water and foods. It also means reducing the substances that break down into TFA.
EFSA and the European Chemicals Agency, or ECHA, continue their work. They are studying the fate of TFA arising from PFAS pesticides in soils and water. (1)
This new value does not answer all questions. But it sends a clear signal: European authorities want to better manage diffuse, highly persistent pollution.
