A Devastating Ecological and Social Crisis
This open letter revisits the presidential statement questioning the unpredictability of the climate crisis. On the contrary, it notes, the warnings from scientists and the IPCC have been known for decades. The signatories highlight, in passing, the inconsistency of state budget choices, denouncing the drastic cut to the “Green Fund” allocated to municipalities in favor of a massive increase in military spending and the underinvestment in civil protection and public services. They also reject the criminalization of ecological movements, wrongly labeled as “radical” or “eco-terrorists.”

In response to this situation, the signatories demand three priority action tracks: an emergency plan guaranteeing the protection of workers, housing for all, and heat-ready public services; an adaptation plan focused on the thermal retrofitting of energy-inefficient buildings, the restoration of the Green Fund, and the preservation of water as a public good; and finally a mitigation plan mandating the end of subsidies and new fossil fuel projects, as well as the expansion of public transportation accessible to everyone.
To finance these major transformations, the signatories advocate taxing the superprofits of fossil fuel and arms companies, along with a climate tax on the fortunes of the wealthiest individuals.
